Nell’ambito del Circuito di FOTOGRAFIA Festival Internazionale di Roma 2012, la galleria Studio
Camera21 presenta la mostra fotografica di KARMEN CORAK, “WASHI.La via tradizionale” a cura
di Marco Meccarelli, con il patrocinio dell'Istituto Giapponese di Cultura.
Il progetto espositivo prevede una selezione di circa 30 immagini in b/n scattate in Giappone, a
Echizen, stampate nel laboratorio di Davide Di Gianni su carta giapponese Kurotani washi, realizzata
da Hayashi Shinji.
Per XI edizione di FOTOGRAFIA 2012, il cui tema è il Lavoro, la carta washi da supporto diventa
anche protagonista del racconto. Nelle immagini di Karmen Corak, affermata restauratrice di opere
d’arte su carta, riaffiora la forza di quel patrimonio culturale, legato alle attività artigianali della
manifattura della carta, che riunisce differenti artigiani, attraverso l’operosità di più mani, grazie alle
quali si realizzano i fogli di carta.

Il progetto in questione è inteso come il recupero di una via tradizionale, perché non è limitato alla
semplice funzione del produrre o del documentare, ma contiene un significato più profondo, che
impone una digressione sulla vita culturale e spirituale dei giapponesi. La Corak coglie l’isolamento, la
solitudine, tra le montagne e lungo un fiume, alla ricerca del mondo della tradizione, ritraendo
l’atmosfera nelle cartiere a conduzione familiare.
I cartai con il gravoso lavoro delle loro braccia custodiscono un intero mestiere di un’antica cultura,
mentre la grazia sommessa traspare in ogni gesto delle mani femminili che nell’acqua gelida rimuovono
le impurità dalle fibre di gelso: un sincero ma anche impegnativo inno al vivere semplice e in sintonia
con la natura.
È per questo motivo che durante la mostra verrà proiettato anche un video sonoro, un documento
molto raro, realizzato dall’artista Rodolfo Fiorenza, che rappresenta il chiritori, il lavaggio con la
rimozione manuale delle impurità tra le fibre, accompagnato da canti tradizionali. È un viaggio che si
svela un atto d’amore, sereno e compiuto, verso una sua concezione acquisita, squisitamente poetica.
Nata in Slovenia nel 1959, Karmen Corak, vive e lavora a Roma. Ha studiato Arti Grafiche a Zagabria
in Croazia e Conservazione e restauro di opere d’arte su carta, a Roma. Si è specializzata in tecniche di
restauro giapponesi frequentando i corsi internazionali dell’ICCROM in Italia, Austria e Giappone. Da
1985 svolge l’attività professionale di restauratore/conservatore di opere su carta e di fotografie.
Membro dell’ Institute of Paper Conservation, ha seguito i seminari sulla manifattura e la tintura delle
carte orientali, in Inghilterra e in Canada. Nel corso dei numerosi viaggi di studio in Cina e Giappone
ha realizzato lavori fotografici sulle tecniche tradizionali della fabbricazione della carta e di opere d’arte.
Pubblica articoli e svolge ricerche sull’applicazione dei materiali e sulle tecniche orientali nel restauro
dell’arte contemporanea. Nel corso della sua conferenza sulla carta “Washi, arte e conservazione”,
tenuta a Roma presso l’Istituto Giapponese di Cultura ha presentato i lavori fotografici eseguiti in
Oriente. Nell’ambito del Circuito di FOTOGRAFIA Festival Internazionale di Roma 2011, la galleria
Studio Camera21 ha presentato la mostra fotografica di Karmen CORAK, AWARE. Oltre l’apparenza,
a cura di Luisa De Marinis. Le sue fotografie sono state pubblicate presso quotidiani e periodici, come
la rivista slovena Art Words magazine e sono presenti nelle collezioni private, tra cui il Centro Urasenke
di Roma.

WASHI. The traditional way

As part of the PHOTOGRAPHY International Festival of Rome 2012, Studio Camera21 will host
the opening of the exhibition: KARMEN CORAK, “WASHI. The traditional way” curated by Marco
Meccarelli, under the patronage of the Japanese Culture Institute.
The exhibition presents a selection of thirty black and white images taken in Japan (Echizen), printed in
the laboratory of Davide Di Gianni on Kurotani washi, handmade Japanese paper by Hayashi Shinji. For
the eleventh edition of PHOTOGRAPHY 2012, whose theme is the Job, washi paper as support
becomes the interpreter of the story. In the images of Karmen Corak, established conservator of works
of art on paper, emerges the strength of that heritage, linked to the craft of paper manufacturing, which
gathers different craftsmen, through the hard work of many hands, producing the sheets of paper.
The work is understood as the return to a traditional way, because it is not limited to the simple function
of production but contains a deeper meaning, which imposes a digression on the spiritual and cultural
life of the Japanese. To immortalize the isolation and loneliness in between mountains and along a river,
in search of the world of tradition, Karmen Corak depicts the family paper mills.
Within the hard work of their arms the paper craftsmen keep a whole profession of ancient culture,
while a subdued grace shines through every gesture of female hands removing impurities from
mulberry fibers in cold water: a sincere but also challenging hymn to live simply and in harmony with
nature.
For this reason, during the exhibition will be shown a video sound, a very rare document, created by
the artist Rodolfo Fiorenza, representing the chiritori, washing with manual removal of impurities from
the fibers, accompanied by a traditional Japanese songs. It is a journey that reveals an act of happy and
fulfilled love, addressed to its own acquired and exquisitely poetic notion of formal, exterior signs.
Born in Slovenia in 1959, Karmen Corak works and lives in Rome. She studied Graphic Arts in Zagreb,
Croatia and Paper Conservation in Rome. She earned her specialisation in Japanese paper conservation
techniques attending international courses at ICCROM in Italy, Austria and Japan, under the direction
of the masters Katsuhiko Masuda and Kazunori Oryu from the Tokyo National Research Institute of
Cultural Properties.
Since 1985 she works in the field of conservation of artworks on paper and photographs. A member of
the Institute of Paper Conservation, she has attended seminars on Oriental papers applied in
restoration in England and Canada.
During her numerous study visits to China and Japan, she completed photographic projects examining
the traditional techniques of papermaking and the creation of works of art.
She has published articles and is involved in research into the application of Oriental materials and
techniques in contemporary art conservation. During her lecture on washi paper, art and conservation,
held in Rome at the Japanese Culture Institute, she presented her photographs taken in China and
Japan. Her work has been published in newspapers and magazines, including Slovenia’s Art Words
magazine. and is a part of private collections, including the Urasenke Center in Rome.
As a part of additional exhibitions of the PHOTOGRAPHY International Festival of Rome 2011, the
gallery Studio Camera21 was selected with the show KARMEN CORAK “AWARE. Beyond the
appearance”, curated by Luisa De Marinis.
